The Answering Machine's function is that of an ordinary answering machine. To take messages when you yourself are unavailable. However, contrary to the real world, the PowWow answering machine doesn't work when you're not at home, that is you're not hooked up to the net and using PowWow. It only works when you are online and have PowWow active. In other words it's useful when you are online but have to leave the computer a little while, or you find a real interesting chat somewhere and don't want to be disturbed.

Note! A common phenomenon in PowWow is that people tend to forget to switch off their answer machine. This prevents them from receiving not only Instant Messages but also PowWow chat requests. This can and has been the cause of misunderstanding and anger. The one part thinks the other doesn't want to be talked to, and the other thinks the first part doesn't want to talk.
