A New Look on 2000

Ever hear of the millenium bug? Of course you have! It's that nasty little bugger that's going to wreak havoc in your computer when 1999 turns into the year 2000. Not only that, it will mess up your microwave oven, your car, your TV and maybe even your glasses if you're unlucky. Well actually not, but it sounds like it anyway. I've checked my computer and it checks out fine. Not a glitch when I switch the date to 2001 and reboot. And I wouldn't worry about the microwave or the car either since they probably don't need to know what day it is to fry your food or pass the old lady stuck in 2nd on the freeway. Probably the only thing you have to worry about is the old computer system used by banks and government agencies, and face it... if they mess up you sue so any which way you win.

So what is the point with all this text? Well it hit me today that there is one other area where the millenium bug probably will stir up some trouble. Have you ever heard of "armageddon" or "ragnarok" or any of the other synonyms out there that basically mean "END OF THE WORLD!!!!"? Well I have and I've heard some people say they know when it's going to happen. Some people can even mark the day it will happen. If you look around a bit I've no doubt you'll find a lot of prophecies. Some are connected directly with the year 2000, others are further into the future. It doesn't really matter, the important thing is my question.

What happens when the armageddon clock is bit by the millenium bug?

Does it start over (again?) or does it start blinking like my bedroom clock when there's a blackout? And if it does start blinking like that, what does that mean? Does it mean Armageddon is now, or that it's been postponed indefinitely until someone is stupid enough to set it again?

Personally I'm not too worried. If the big cataclysm decides to hit there's probably not much I can do about it. I don't consider myself an evil person so I should be able to get one of the left over tickets to that circus in the sky, be it Odin, God or Allah selling them. And I won't ever again get a bill from my ISP either! We've been here longer than we think we have and we'll probably be here longer than we hope. If the armageddon clock starts ticking there will be little we can do about it, if we even notice it. So when you've finished reading this, go out there and take the days as they come. After all, eternity is but a moment in our lives ;-)
